Comtest acquires battery management technology

Comtest Sales Manager Hilton Preston with Erik Verest, Midtronics Sales Manager Industrial Products

Comtest has expanded its range of industrial and electrical test equipment to include battery management technology. The recognised world leader in battery management technology, Midtronics, provides innovative battery testing, monitoring and diagnostic charging solutions for a wide range of battery applications, including vehicle starting batteries, backup power and motive power.

During a recent trip to South Africa Erik Verest, Midtronics Sales Manager Industrial Products, together with Hilton Preston of Comtest, visited a number of end users who were excited about the prospects that these battery chargers offered them.

“Many companies like the Telcos, Mines and Industries heavily reliant on standby power,  waste hundreds and  thousands of rand each year replacing banks of batteries when they could use a comprehensive, non-invasive method of predicting battery capacity, and in so doing only replace those batteries whose actual lifecycle is over,” says Verest.

“ Using the Midtronics non-destructive, non-invasive testing system, these companies now have the ability to predict battery maintenance cycles more accurately. Midtronics empowers them  to make an informed decision – replace or extend a battery’s lifecycle - saving time and money and affording peace of mind.

“We showed some end users in South Africa how, by making use of our management tool, they could save R1million just in the coming year using Midtronics testers.  The Belgium Telco had a serial defect policy in place which required them to replace their complete battery banks every eight years.    Since using the Midtronics testers they have saved in the region of €1.75 million over three years and are now only replacing batteries when they really need to – extending their life in some instances by three years”.

Hilton Preston of Comtest added:  “In South Africa the amount of standby power that is required is significant and to manage it requires a lot of time.  From our experience many companies run in excess of 200 days behind their planned battery maintenance programme which can result in downtime resulting in aggrevation and a serious loss of revenue.  With the Midtronics solution  we are now able to assist these companies to keep to their battery maintenance programmes and to be aware of the batteries state of health at all times.”

Midtronics industrial battery testing and monitoring equipment is preferred or required for battery management decisions at major communications and energy providers around the world. The Midtronics team provides the highest quality battery management products while creating industry-driving technologies.

Comtest is the authorised distributor of the industrial range of Midtronics  Battery Test Equipment in southern Africa.
